(Referring to Tommys Deceased father Jimmy Darmody). Richard then says to Tommy: "Your father was a good shooter". Richard is on a pelet shooting range at the flea circus, hitting all the targets, he gets a prize and gives it to Tommy. She asks Richard to take Tommy to the boardwalk flea circus. She has kept Richard on as a "caretaker" and is raising her orphaned grandson Tommy Darmody as though he were her own child. She introduces a new girl, Evelyn, to the others. The beautifully edited sequence is all leading up to Harrow saving poor little Tommy Darmody, who's already so traumatised by this point that he barely flinches at having a gun pointed at his head.Gillian Darmody has converted The Commodore's home into an upscale brothel and acts as madam to a large stable of prostitutes. ![]() From his very first appearance, it was clear that behind the serene, damaged exterior was a trained killing machine, and it was this disconnect that made him one of the show's most compelling and tragic characters.īut Harrow taking out every single member of season three Big Bad Gyp Rosetti's crew in one fell swoop, just when Rossetti seemed to be on top of the world, is utterly unexpected and viscerally thrilling to watch. The fact that scarred army marksman Richard Harrow is capable of taking down an entire houseful of armed men almost without breaking a sweat is no surprise in itself. Somewhat unusually for the show his death is kept entirely off screen, which only heightens the jarring shock of the moment when Nucky and Margaret open up an innocuous-looking packing crate to find his body. The writing was on the wall for Owen as soon as Margaret became pregnant with his child, and the pair began plotting their happily ever after (always a bad idea on Boardwalk Empire). Roguishly charming yet a stone-cold badass when he needed to be, Owen was more or less a model employee – that is, until he began a fiery affair with Nucky's disillusioned wife Margaret. Nucky's affable bodyguard and driver Owen was never intended to stick around for as long as he did, but over the course of his two-season run he became one of the show's most well-liked characters. After two seasons of being half a gangster, this was the moment Nucky really got his hands dirty. "I died in the trenches, years back," he says calmly, almost coaching his one-time father figure through the act. As soon as Jimmy refuses to let his badass best friend Richard Harrow come with him as backup to meet with Nucky, it's clear that he too knows this is a suicide mission.Īgainst an atmospheric and rainy backdrop, Jimmy walks up to Nucky and makes no attempt to defend himself or beg for his life. From the very first moment he waged war against his former mentor Nucky, this ending was probably inevitable, but that didn't make it sting any less. The end of season two was just bad all around for poor Jimmy. Weird as in: Jimmy beats the hell out of a professor who comes onto Gillian, they go back to Jimmy's room, and Gillian seduces her son by plaintively calling herself "the loneliest person on Earth". In what might still be the show's most disturbing twist, the penultimate episode of season two features a flashback in which Gillian visits a younger Jimmy at college, and things get weird. But we were sure that the impropriety of their relationship would remain subtext. ![]() A former showgirl and sexual abuse survivor, Gillian had no boundaries whatsoever with her son and always held thinly-veiled resentment for his wife, Angela. There was something distinctly off about Jimmy Darmody's relationship with his young and overly attentive mother Gillian from the very start. After finding out that his colleague Eric Sebso has ties to Nucky and the criminal underworld, Van Alden sets out to forcibly cleanse the sins from him in front of a stunned crowd of Baptist churchgoers, and in the process drowns him. The self-flagellation scene was certainly a hat-tip in that direction.īut the puritanical Van Alden finally broke bad in this out-of-the-blue explosion of violence from episode 11. Admittedly, it had been hinted throughout the first season that Michael Shannon's twitchy government agent Nelson Van Alden was a few dozen sandwiches short of anything resembling a picnic.
